GREETING/MESSAGE CARD Alternative Valentine Card - St Cyril & Methodius   PRODUCT CODE SE02   SUITABILITY Saints/Feast day greeting - on Valentine’s Day, show someone you care by sending a Cyril and Methodius Card, it should give them a smile . . .   WORDING INSIDE THE CARD

Cyril and Methodius were two brothers who lived in the 9th Century. They brought Christianity to the Southern Slavonic peoples and are venerated as the patron saints of Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia. In 1980 they were declared patron saints of Europe by Pope John Paul II (himself a Slav), joining St Benedict, and thus symbolising the unity of Europe, East and West. Their feast day is the 14th February. Cyril died in Rome on the 14th February 869 and was buried in the church of St Clement on the Coelian Hill. Methodius, after some more years of missionary work, was buried alongside his brother.
Some years ago the brothers replaced St Valentine in the Catholic Church Calendar of Saints. About Valentine we know little more than that he died in Rome about the year 270. The association of romantic love with St Valentine’s day seems to go back to the 14th century and the poet, Geoffrey Chaucer, who suggested that birds chose their partners on that day.

The association of romantic love with St Valentine’s day seems to go back to the  14th century and the poet, Geoffrey Chaucer, who suggested that birds chose their partners on that day. Our Cyril and Methodius are two mice who star in a series of “Little Saints” cards, making their first appearance on the 14th February 1994. We jokingly made them our new Valentines.

WATERMEAD STORY The little mice that accompany the our "Little Saints" in their escapades are called Cyril and Methodius – named after two 9th century saints. St Cyril and St Methodius were the two brothers responsible for bringing Christianity to the Slavonic peoples and last century replaced St Valentine on the Catholic Church’s calendar of saints – and need-less-to-say inspired Watermead's alternative Valentine’s card for the 14th February.
