WATERMEAD STORY Our Mass Cards were the fourth project undertaken with sixteen in the finished set. Each card holds our own wording - from our hymns and from the poems and prayers gifted to us. The original design was a card made for Father John, who so liked the vine design, phrasing and card colouring, that he asked if it could be produced as a mass card. For years, he had always made his own mass cards - a simple message printed onto a folded card with a prayer card pasted onto the front. Click here to read more about the people and background story to producing our mass cards. WHAT IS A MASS CARD? The tradition of sending mass cards is given on the back of each of our mass card -“When we pray we often pray for someone in particular. At mass we ask others to share that prayer and the mass card is a greetings card of faith and love, telling of our prayer for our loved ones at the celebration of the Eucharist”. Sending a card with this promise of prayer at mass follows on from a tradition that began early in the Church for those who had died - epitaphs on tombs asking for prayers go back to the 2nd century. Over the centuries this wanting to pray for those who had died was brought into the prayers at mass with people being asked to remember the dead during the Eucharistic prayer. Today a mass card can be used for all occasions where a special prayer at mass would be especially appreciated - bereavement, in memory, birthday, new job, illness, encouragement, etc. - and the various wordings on Watermead mass cards reflect the many possible uses. Before sending a mass card to someone an arrangement is made with a priest for the promised prayer to be said at a mass that he is celebrating and the priest then signs the card to authenticate the arrangement (usually an offering/donation is made to the priest/church).
