He was kidnapped by Irish pirates at the age of sixteen, and lived as a shepherd in the pagan wilds of Western Ireland. Here he developed his life of prayer and awareness of God. Eventually Patrick escaped his captors and made his way to Gaul, today’s France, returning to Ireland in 432 after being called in a dream to preach and evangelise there.
